SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR
JAMES SMITH

James Smith was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. He is married to Kirkland (Thomas) of Mount Pleasant. They are blessed to be proud parents of Emerson, Thomas, Paul, and Shannon. They attend church at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, the church he grew up in.  James is currently a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, a Major in the South Carolina Army National Guard, a small business owner, and practicing attorney in Columbia, South Carolina. His entire life has been dedicated to service to others in his community, state, and nation.  He can trace military service to every generation of his family dating back to the Revolutionary War, and his parents instilled in him those values of duty, service and leadership. These values have carried James throughout the various aspects of his life.

James is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and University of South Carolina School of Law. As a Major in the South Carolina Army National Guard, his twelve (12) month combat tour in Afghanistan makes him one of a small number of public officials nationwide who have served the United States in combat. Smith’s military service shaped his outlook on civic service, as well as his appreciation for those who sacrificed before him.  In the various aspects of his service, he fought the Taliban head-on; worked hard to shake things up at the State House; and is always committed to make South Carolina a better place for all to live and work.  Smith served eight years as a JAG officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard when a 2001 visit to Ground Zero in New York stirred something inside of him. “It had a profound impact on me,” he recalls. It motivated him to resign his Officer Commission so that he could enlist as an infantryman, and, at age 37, begin basic training.  James Smith is a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard. Use of his military rank, job titles, and photographs in uniform does not imply endorsement by the Department of the Army or the Department of Defense.  For more information, click here.

BEAUFORT COUNTY COUNCIL DISTRICT 8
BRENDA BRANDT

I believe that the most critical issues facing Beaufort County today are preparing for growth by ensuring that we have the infrastructure in place to support the increase in population that will come with that growth. Infrastructure, affordable housing, maintaining adequate green spaces, and quality public education are key to sustaining our quality of life in Beaufort County.  My experience over the past 20 years as a Human Resources Leader working for large global corporations has given me the skills to deal with complex issues, build consensus, and partner with others to develop solutions for the problems of today and develop long-term strategic plans for the future.

MARK MCGINNIS

I have a blue-collar background and work ethic, but I have a white-collar job. I am an Engineering Group Head at Gulfstream Aerospace. I began my career as an Avionics Technician and served 22 years in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard. I worked hard and showed ability to become an engineer and a leader. My years as an engineer have proven my ability to work with a team and to solve difficult problems. I understand how to approach problems in a logical manner and find the best solutions.

ISSUES:

1. Land conservation: Protect our green space and coastlines from development.

2. Balance: We need to improve infrastructure, such as roads and utilities to catch up to existing housing. We should slow growth to shopping and support businesses to meet the needs of the existing population.

3. Whole community approach: We need low-income housing to support the existing work force. We should promote the idea that all income levels can live in close proximity to each other for the benefit of all.
